These pendants were so popular when I first carried them in the shop that I decided to have them created in a set of 20 custom colors just for the Snapcrafty shop. And here they are! What do you think?

They fit a 25x18 cameo or cabochon perfectly and are easily drilled to create spots for adding jumprings. You can hang them vertically or horizontally depending on where you drill the holes.

These colors are my favorite! Aqua and tangerine.

I created an embellished pendant just to show a little example of what types of things you can create with them. I used one of our 25x18mm skeleton cameos and then added some of our lucite flowers. For a bit of sparkle, I also added some teeny Swarovski rhinestones...

Enameled rings in new colors! These rings are so popular, we decided to have some made in custom colors. I am loving these soft and pretty hues.

Princess roses are the perfect necklace centerpiece. Just add a bail and voila, you have a gorgeous pendant.

We now carry a range of gorgeous Griffin silk thread in a rainbow of colors! I just love using this thread to create knotted bead necklaces as it has a fantastic drape. It even comes with a beading needle pre-attached to make stringing beads even easier.

Whipped frosting roses are the newest cabochon to join the Snapcrafty family. These really look like frosting! Yum.

I am so happy to be adding these items to the shop: Glitterline Pliers from Eurotool! They are hands-down my favorite tools and are the ones that I use every day. I've had mine for a few years now and they are still going strong so I think they're a great investment and also quite a bargain. Plus, the glitter, am I right? A little sparkle is always in order.

I'm stocking them in a deluxe 5-pc set for $31.95 and then also individually at an economical $6.50 apiece.

Also, we now have wire! Right now, we're carrying 3 finishes: non-tarnish silver, non-tarnish brass and antique brass/gunmetal in both 20 and 22 gauge--perfect for wire wrapping!

This weekend I knitted this adorable dishcloth from a free pattern I found online from the Mason-Dixon Knitting Outside the Lines book. It turned out so cute and was really simple to make. It would be an adorable gift given with some pretty soap for the kitchen or even the bathroom. I'm keeping this in mind for Christmas!

For this project, I used a soft cotton-linen blend-- CotLin yarn from Knitpicks. I also picked up a bunch of Sugar n' Cream yarn for future dishcloths as it was on sale at Michaels. This was the recommended yarn choice, but I opted for the CotLin as I had never tried knitting with it before. It wasn't at all hard on my hands like some cotton yarn can be. I'm happy with how it turned out and will likely make a few more to match. I think my knitting/yarn addiction might be flaring back up...

Happy New Year to my Snapcrafty friends and family! Thanks for making 2010 so amazing. I met so many new and wonderful people who shared their stories with me making me feel so very special. I am confident more than ever that I am in the place where I should be.

We are already concentrating on all the new projects we hope to bring to the shop in 2011. We have lots of new items we'll be stocking in the coming weeks and we will be updating the shop with some lovely new photos courtesy of my new camera which will be here in 3 (too, too long) days. We are also working hard on our stand-alone website, which we are very excited about!

These new settings have turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to my bail world.

My new favorite, the "pretty roses" bail/setting was meant to be with this showy gorgeous bloom.

This "sweet butterfly" bail/setting looked so perfect with a garden rose.

What else does a girl need?

A new Asian grocery opened up a couple blocks down the street and the have entire aisle of candy. I controlled myself to purchasing three items. The chocolate pine cones are definitely not entering the house again--way too delicious.

I got a fab deal on these shoes. Too good to pass up. I can't wait to wear these with some tights and a cute dress!


I fell in love and had to have these Bjork Jeffrey Campbell shoes. They are so gorgous! Perfect for the cold winter with a lovely faux fur lining. They will go with everything.

Is it really nearing the end of August already? I guess it must be. My tomatoes are finally ripening and I have more cucumbers than I know what to do with. The blog has been neglected over the last month, but I have no apologies because I have been thoroughly enjoying the short summer that Michigan has to offer. Gardening, trips to the lake, floating in the water, fresh basil, fighting scourges of mosquitoes, this is what has filled my bits of free time.

Pepper plants are flourishing. We are picking pecks of them! I have never had such success with peppers before. I'm not sure what I did differently. I just bought these plants from the Farmers Market and they grew like gangbusters.

Banana Peppers that I will pickle. Know a good recipe?

Peas are my favorite summer garden vegetable. I eat them right off the vine, so very few of them actually make it to a plate.

This yellow squash looks like a gourd. I bought the plant as a seedling from the kids next door for $0.25. They had a little red wagon full of vegetable seedlings and took it around the neighborhood. So cute.

My first red tomato! Always landmark day of summer for me.

And a delicious salad made with spoils from the garden. Fresh arugula, tomatoes, lettuce and some more fixins'.

Plenty of new items and deals are in the works with the Snapcrafty Shop. Good things are happening and ideas are maturing. I'll be excited to share them with you as they happen with much greater frequency here on the blog as the summer wraps up. I hope your summers have been relaxing and restorative!

The very talented Aimee Ray made it exactly how I wanted it even despite my very many revisions and mind-changes and quite specific preferences. She is so very patient, nice and sweet--thank-you Aimee, I love my new logo! The new site is going to also be very amazing, I can't wait for you all to see it.

I needed a necklace for a dress. I saw this amazing necklace at Anthropologie and fell in love...but not $238.00 kind-of-love.

That's when I made this. It's pretty simple. I strung 4 individual bead strands and tied them in a big knot. Easy and quick (and fun!) and definitely not an expense that I'd have to take a mortgage out to finance.

I've been holding off on listing this in the shop because I knew it would be chaotic for me to cut and collate together. But I finally pulled it together and here it is. Lovely stacks of felty delight. Each one has 60 colors and is soft and pretty to look at. I now work surrounded by it and I can't say that I mind. I'm certainly not afraid of color (have you noticed?) and this satisfies that need. If you also have this craving, you can indulge it in the shop.

Now, if I can tear myself away from the computer (taxes, design homework, shop work) I'm going to try to enjoy the bit of spring that has sprung around these parts this weekend. How about you?

I decided today that what our house is missing is a cuckoo clock. And what do you know, Etsy has beneficently provided several prime candidates. I haven't totally made up my mind, but I'm kinda sweet on the first little number and I'm pretty sure I need it to be green. Or maybe yellow.

Much of my family including my mother is German, so I couldn't pass up selling this German glass glitter in the shop. It's vintage, even! It's so sparkly because it's made with real silver coated glass. This is the premium stuff and it's so the jam. I can't wait until next Christmas to make some gorgeous ornaments with it. In the mean-time I'm sure I'll come up with a million other ways to work it into my craft projects around casa Snapcrafty.

This is just one of the many new non-jewelry related items I'm bringing to the shop this year. I'm hoping that I can unite lots of amazing craft materials in one place along with jewelry supplies and beads. I'd love to know what you think about my moving in this direction.

My goal for the last few months has been to find a reliable source for lead-free findings. I finally found some really great ones! After talking to the owner of the company, I'm confident that they are of really great quality and are tested for compliance with Proposition 65 (the lead-in-retail-jewelry in California law). It's really important to me to make sure all of my contemporary findings are lead-safe. Too many kids and pets are exposed to beads in homes to take any chances.

I have a full line of lead-free, hypoallergenic findings now in 4 metals: antique brass, copper, silver, and gunmetal. Here's a look at some of my new pretties!

It's an explosion of color over at the shop this week! I've added tons of new flower cabochons. The first are a 35mm size in a lush chrysanthemum design available in 18 vibrant colors. I can see these as amazing pendants, brooches, or embellishments for keepsake boxes. There's also a smaller sized 15mm flower cab in the same 18 coordinating colors. These are perfect for rings, necklaces, dangling earrings and charms. You can even coordinate jewelry pieces between the large and smaller sized cabs. new year, what's in store?

The last couple of weeks have been so relaxing, I've been up into the Smoky mountains, then down into the South and back home again to the bracing cold of midwestern Michigan. Feeling refreshed from our winter break, Mr. Snapcrafty and I are feeling so motivated to make 'things' happen around here right now.
There are home-improvements planned and..... my very own shop website is on the horizon! I'm exhausted at all the mock-up designs I've already tried, but I'm finally homing in on the one that is just right and we're getting down to business today. I'm very excited about it and I think it will be a little different than any other bead shop out there. I also have some brand-new oh-so fantastical colorful and delicious cabochons that are going to be arriving in the shop very very soon. I think you will love them.

I'm also adding a new product line to the shop...hopefully it will be photographed today, what could it be?

I have so many wonderful things planned for 2010. Both in the shop and for my home and family.

I think this new year will be the best yet. Happy new year from us to all of you!

All the shopping is done and nearly all the gifts have been made and mailed, whew! Just a few little finishing touches left and wrapping to be done. Yesterday I sat and watched A Christmas Story and Elf while I wrapped gifts and drank hot cocoa--the only thing missing was snow gently falling outside the window, but it was lovely nonetheless.

Of all my homemade gifts this year, the one that turned out the best was making jars of spicy hot chocolate mix. I tweaked Alton Brown's recipe a little bit taking out the corn starch and adding some spices to make what I ended up labeling "Aztec Hot Chocolate Mix". I also mixed my finished mix with hot milk and not hot water--both because I removed the cornstarch and because it's much richer and tastier this way. This recipe makes 5 full 9oz jars with a little bit of room on top for adding cinnamon sticks and chocolate chips. Here's how I made it:

Aztec Hot Chocolate Mix

Ingredients:
2.5 cups dry milk
2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup dutched cocoa (I tried both the Droste and Ghirardelli)
1 tsp salt (a fine grain)
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cayenne
chocolate chips (Ghirardelli milk chocolate are fantastic)
cinnamon sticks

Mix all the ingredients (except the chips and cinnamon sticks these are for decorating the tops of the jars) with a whisk and put through a sieve if desired. Then divide up the mix into jars leaving an inch on top. Tap the jars down on the counter to tamp down mix, then place 2 cinnamon sticks on top and fill space around with chocolate chips. You add 2 tbs of mix to 8oz hot milk. Yum.

You can also make labels to print out on adhesive paper:

vanilla sugar

This past weekend I finally gathered all the supplies I've been collecting and started the process of making vanilla sugar to give out as holiday gifts. I wasn't able to find a reasonably priced vanilla bean source in town, so I first ordered some delicious Madagascar vanilla beans from spidercamp on Etsy . They smelled so fragrant, I knew what they were before I even opened the envelope! Yum.

I set up camp in the kitchen on a cutting board and split each vanilla bean down the middle. Then, I scraped down the inside of each bean with a paring knife collecting all the tiny seeds. All the seeds went in the jars filled with cane sugar. Then the scraped bean pods went in, too. I've been shaking the jars a bit each day to break up the seeds and redistribute them. I plan to let the sugar absorb the vanilla flavor for a week or so, then I'll remove the beans and break up any remaining clumps of seeds evenly in the vanilla with a wooden spoon. The sugar will then go into little jelly jars and one vanilla bean pod will go into each jar for a little decoration. I made little labels for the jars, too, that I'll print on some adhesive paper. Then, I'll just wrap the jars with some gold ribbon and voila! A little holiday gift ready for giving.

I just added some lovely new vintage feather charms to the shop. I searched for these all around and up and down the whole world, it seemed like, and then found them practically in my backyard. These are some of my most favorite beads ever. I'm digging in my vintage bead boxes today and you'll see what else I can dig up today in the new section in the shop. If you please.

My holiday purchases have begun to arrive. My UPS man, who is usually very good, left a box from Anthropologie out on the stoop rather than under the awning (?) while it was raining and my box was soaked through and through. Everything inside was completely wet. A gifty inside for someone-not-to-be-named came in a cool box that was ruined. What up UPS man? Maybe I will forgive you if you deliver my shipment of beads I have been waiting for. Maybe.

It's snowing now over at the shop as I've had a little fun making a new December shop banner in Photoshop with some snowflake brushes I got at deviantART. Love that site. I'm busy today with adding some new items to the shop I've had sitting here in my workshop. As I was doing that, I decided to make a new shop section called, well, 'New', so that shoppers can browse all the new items easily before they buried by relisted stuff. I know I certainly didn't finish my shopping, or even get a good dent in it yesterday, so I decided to extend the shop sale for the rest of the weekend. See the previous post for full details.

Now that the holidays are in full swing, I think I'll pull out the decorations. I love doing this every year because it is entirely a surprise what is in each box. My memory is wiped fully clean over the many months in between. Each little item has a story of who made it and where it came from. This Christmas will be my first as part of a married couple so it feels a bit more special, even though I have been celebrating the holiday with my husband for over 9 years. We will actually be spending Christmas day together rather than with our separate families and I am really looking forward to that.

I remember this ornament on my childhood tree. It was given to me when I went off on my own and is one of my favorites. I have a few like this with very thin glass and I fear for the day there will be a casualty. The dog ornament is a new addition given to me by my parents. It is a tiny replica of my dog Luna. Love it.

My husband bravely ate a few bites before coming clean and agreeing it was not so good.

I know I have to pack about a million orders here, but I'm completely distracted by my Thanksgiving menu. Last year at this time, I was bogged down in labwork and not a very happy person. Being able to cook again is such a fantastic luxury and I want to make something a little special. Here is what's lined up so far:

For appetizers: Prosciutto-wrapped grilled shrimp, Cranberry-orange relish and gorgonzola cheese on toasts; For dinner: a herb-roasted and brined chicken, chipotle sweet potatoes, a warm wilted spinach salad with cranberry, apple, feta, and pecans, homemade gravy, and cornbread stuffing with fresh sage and rosemary from the garden; For dessert: a Sara-Lee chocolate pie.

I have no business baking pies--I know when to leave that to the professionals and my husband requested a chocolate pie. All of this food for two people. And one lucky dog. Cooking should keep me busy tomorrow, so some prep may have to be done today. I suppose some order-fulfillment is on the agenda right now. What are you doing to prepare for your Thanksgiving meals?

Every day this week I have felt as though it was one day later. I guess I'm just ready for the weekend and all the projects that are waiting for me there. Finishing painting the kitchen, starting on painting the living room, Christmas shopping, Christmas crafting, finalizing my Thanksgiving menu. The shop has seemed more quiet than usual over the last couple of days and I wonder if other people are mulling over all the holiday plans creeping up on them, as well.

I've finally added my holiday gift to the Snapcrafty shop today--it's a special edition vintage flower bead collection. You can read all about it right here while I'm off to the post office to drop off a load of packages.

curried sweet potato and carrot soup

The leaves are almost gone from the trees and we're setting in for the long cold winter in Michigan. I've been thinking about my thanksgiving menu this week since we'll have company for the very first time over this holiday, yay! I want to welcome my sister-in-law with a tasty meal. Over the last month I've been perfecting this recipe for curried sweet potato and carrot soup and I'd say it's pretty much ready for prime time. I ate two bowls last night so quickly that I forgot to take a photo. How much of a piggie am I? (I staged a new photo, but it's cold soup! Don't tell, ok?)

3 large carrots
3 large sweet potatoes
1 medium white onion
3 large celery stalks
2 tbs butter
6 cups chicken or veg soup stock (homemade is best)
6 roasted garlic cloves
4 tbs curry powder
1 tsp paprika
1 lemon
1/4 cup cream
salt to taste
fresh cilantro

Peel and chop the carrots, sweet potatoes and celery (yes, peel the celery). Steam until soft. Chop onions and sweat in 2 tbs butter in stock pot until translucent. Add steamed vegetables. Add soup stock to cover. To make roasted garlic, cover cloves with oil in an oven safe container (or in lots of foil) and cook at 250 degrees for 40 minutes while soup is simmering. Season soup with curry powder and paprika. When garlic is soft, add it to soup. Blend soup with immersion blender or food processer and season with salt. Add cream. At end add the juice of 1 lemon to increase acidity. When soup is served, add fresh cilantro and a bit of cream. If you serve the soup the next day, squeeze a lemon or lime wedge into each bowl. Yum!

Ok, I'm feeling a little nervous here...I must confess. Sure, I could show you photos of all the great new stuff I added to the snapcrafty shop today. That would be easy. But, I'm going to show you a little piece of my soul instead. I don't claim to be an artist by any stretch of the imagination. I'm learning more and more every day, building my Photoshop muscles up. Here's a little glimpse into what types of things I have been learning to do in my design classes. My little self portrait. The story is that I had my husband take some photos of me lying in the grass. I thought it would reflect my love of nature and biology. Then I got the idea to cover my face in a grass texture. Through many, many iterations of this idea this is what I got. I had fun with it and learned some new tricks. That's what it's all about.

As the leaves start to fall outside, I've listed some new leaf charms in the shop. They're just the thing for the new chill in the air we're feeling here in Michigan. I've just bought a new cozy sweater and I'm snuggling in here for a few minutes before I rush off to class. We had to complete a self-portrait and I think mine is rather funny. This week has been a little rough. I have to say I'm really glad that the weekend is here. Even though I'm really happy to be doing a job I love, there are still things that get to me. I hate to complain when I know I'm a very lucky girl, but is a tiny bit of venting ok? Indulge me.

I had a customer leave me *12* neutral feedback comments on Etsy with no explanation whatsoever. They also didn't respond to a very friendly and polite email requesting more information. I take my feedback very seriously and I like to think I do a great job of taking care of my customers. This has been bothering me all week. To think I'll be stuck with this forever. I wish I could just turn off my obsessive brain and let it go. Ok, that's all I'll say about it. I feel a little better, so thank-you for listening.

Tonight it's off to a friend's birthday party and then the weekend is free. Maybe we'll get a new refrigerator. Isn't it funny that that is so exciting? Well it is. Then I have some embroidery plans. Christmas isn't that far away and I'm already thinking of some possible gifts. What are you doing this weekend?

I finally powered through and added a new section to the shop...gemstones! Even though I'm a plastic and glass girl at heart, I do love a pretty gemstone, too. I had such fun picking out some pretty ones to start off and I'll be adding more as time goes on. I hope you can find a place in your heart for these pretty stones. They really do mix well with glass pieces. To serve as inspiration, I rearranged the entire shop by color using the new 'Rearrange Shop' Etsy feature. It took me a ridiculous amount of time, but it was very satisfying in the end. I hope you'll take a peek!

long sleeves

The summer in Michigan has been short this year. But, honestly I'm already longing for the fall. If for no other reason than to start wearing winter clothes. I'm a cozy sweater and warm boots kind of girl and I find myself pining away for the long sleeved shirts in the back of my closet. Yesterday, despite the sun it was a teensy bit chilly and I decided to wear my favorite flannel shirt. It was lovely.

Last night I finally got around to editing some photos of new lucite flowers for the flower section of the shop. These are so cute and I have them in *11* great colors! Today I'm pushing to add more items after the outdoor photoshoot I had yesterday. I'm excited because I'm installing a new section in the shop to be coming very soon! Let's keep it secret for now ;)

Over the last few days I've been recovering from a nasty summer cold. I braved the chaotic traffic at the local Meier grocery store (whoever thought Tuesday night was the big shopping night?) and got some veggies and noodles to make a big batch of warming soup. It was just what I needed yesterday in between napping and getting done what I could on Etsy. Last night my husband got home late and ate the soup that I had left out for his dinner. Then this morning I stumbled out of bed and look what I saw staring up at me:

are you watching project runway this season?

Finally Project Runway is back and I'm so excited for it. **Spoilers alert if you haven't watched it yet!** (I hate it when someone forgets to post a spoilers notice!) A friend and I had a little watching party last night and managed to talk all the way through the 'All Stars' portion of the evening, but then quieted up for the actual premier of the season 6 show. I'm not sure who my favorite designer is yet. No one really blew me away.

Even though Christopher won the challenge, I actually liked Ra'mon's dress the best. And I respect the fact that he completely changed careers from medicine to fashion. That's a big risk. I guess I can relate to that a little bit. Ari's outfit was totally crazy and from outer space, but I was still a little surprised that Mitchell wasn't voted out since he really didn't even complete an outfit. The judges sometimes surprise me but overall Heidi, Nina and Michael Kors are still totally on point. My verdict: I still love the show, even after the loooong hiatus. I'll definitely be watching it this season!

motivation

After having a not-as-productive-as-I-would-have-liked weekend, I'm trying to get motivated to do many things today. I thought perhaps listing them here might get me in gear.

1. Write my wedding shower and wedding thank-you cards. This must be done soon. I'm not sure what the statute is on how long you can take, but I'm thinking 2 months might be pushing it.
2. Pack up orders. I'm almost done with this, just gotta stick them in the envelopes and print out labels.
3. Buy books for my graphic design classes. I already have them sitting in my Amazon shopping cart, I'm not sure what I'm waiting for, but I should probably just buy them. It's unlikely that they'll magically go on sale.
4. Wash, chop up, and freeze fruit for my green smoothies. I'm on a raw smoothie kick lately and a great trick to make the smoothies frosty and thick is blended frozen fruit. (My dog loves these smoothies! She always gets a little taste.)

When all of this is done tonight, I'll reward myself by watching the newest episode of True Blood during dinner with Mr. Snapcrafty! This show is so awesome this season. I love it!

And for a dinner salad, I'll probably be harvesting some more of my delicious garden tomatoes that are ripening like gangbusters in my little garden. I've been eating them with balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper and they are so yum!

Now that the wedding hubbub has died down, I'm feeling a bit more rested and able to gather my thoughts and blog on a more regular basis. So here is my thought for today: It always seemed to be a point of contention on blogs/etsy forums, etc... that supply and jewelry sellers didn't want to share their sources and how that was uncool or mean. Nowadays, I can very much relate as to why that is. I just spent all day trying to source a couple of items that have been very troublesome for me to find. I have been looking for many hours for these items. Many. hours. Many more hours than I spent today. I ended up finding another different, but equally difficult to find and pretty sweet, item on a website that I had to translate from Japanese using Babelfish. Luckily they ship to the US. So there you have it. Now my eyes are so bleary I have to get off the computer for a little while. But, a successful day, I think.
